week 7

We talked to the costume designer Carole Machin about her role in projects like Moon Knight and Dune and how she got to the position she is in. She told us about how it is inevitable that you will have to do free work experience to get into the industry. You can email a lot of people in media to get work experience and if you don't get a response you can always email again and be tenacious to getting that experience. When on a set have a notepad to write the name and a description of people you're introduced to as it will help you stand out by remembering. Write down anywhere you can stay so you aren't just based in the North East. Always read the call sheet.

B roll/supporting footage

Can be used to fill in blanks or mistakes or can express certain themes in an interesting way
  • insert shots-show a different angle/shot of a scene
  • FX shots-use of special effects to show something that can't be shown practically
  • establishing shots-sets up character, time or location
  • stock footage-shots or footage already filmed
  • archive material-footage filmed before, not made for production
  • reenactments-show something that may not have footage to fill in gaps
our group then decided how we could use these types of B roll to express themes and ideas in our documentary as well as making interviews more visually interesting.
