week 14 (10th Feb)

This is the final week of the BFI where we first celebrated and looked back on the course to talk about what we liked and what could have been improved about it. We then watched the other groups' rough cuts as our edit wasn't finished yet which was really insightful as we were able to hear why they made the creative decisions they did. It also gave us a good idea of what our rough cut might look like. After this we finished off any final production work we needed to do where I started to make a layout and filling in the details of the call sheet. I got one of my group members to read out the details I needed for the risk assessment so that we would type it out more efficiently. We were told our risk assessment had to be formatted correctly so we started working on that as a group so we could do it efficiently alongside the call sheet this meant we got any final production pieces finished in good time to meet the deadline. This course has been incredibly helpful in developing m...

Week 13(3rd Feb)

Image
we were told to organise an editing file with exactly how we want our documentary to be put together. This involves script, shot order, transitions and B roll. This means that another editor can put it together exactly how we want it to look. After this I took the laptop home to finish off any work not completed in session This really helped me grow my skills as an editor and script writer even if I already had experience in both from previous projects but this has helped me get especially good at both. However finding all the clips and the previous organisation was definitely a challenge. However this really helped me follow my action plan.

Week 12

First we got our equipment and made surer we had all of our footage so we were in a good position to start editing. Then we asked if we could take the laptop away for a week so that we could make a start on the editing as a rough cut would be needed to start properly writing the script for the conclusion of our documentary. After this we wrote an email to request a material release form for the school we filmed at for our gen z interviews. At the end of the session we filmed a section for the history of online dating which will be part of our vlog sections. I wrote the script for this the day before and researched Match.com which was the first dating app and added the fact that his girlfriend left him for someone on Match.com to keep a more lighthearted and playful tone that the documentary wants to capture. I then skipped ahead to Tinder as it fits our idea about love being faster with Tinder's swiping feature being a big part of that change in love. I kept this history light and...

Week 11

We had a talk with Laura Moscrop who is a camera person and told us about how to write a CV by including any projects you have worked on and making sure the employer can keep your CV. This is very useful for any future careers in the industry and will definitely be something I will refer back to when applying for any future projects. We then pitched our projects again to make sure our concept was coherent and easy to understand. After this we started working on finer details for our project so that we know any last pieces we need to film. We planned to film the introduction next week before the session as it worked best for everyone involved and we could do the final parts of the filming in time for the deadline. We then started on the production file to get work like risk assessments in order to be ahead of next week so that we were as organised as possible for the coming weeks.

Week 10

Before the session me and Harry went and filmed an interview with Shirley as an example of love for the older generation to fit with our generational love ideas. This gave a new and varied perspective compared to a lot of our other interviews. After this we then went to the sea front to get some supporting footage by filming the stormy sea for a time lapse where we got around 10 minutes of footage. We were given a list of events as a suggestion of what our documentaries should look like and we decided what we should keep in, what we should remove and what we should move around. We decided to keep the structure mostly the same as it was very similar to our structure already but decided to cut some smaller sections that were different. However the main structure of the documentary will start with gen z interviews then move to millennials then the history of online dating then the oldest generation to give it a coherent structure that makes it easy to follow and understand

Week 8/9

We were off for a week where we planned what we would shoot and develop our ideas about the documentary. After that in week 9 we touched base and we planned more interviews and where to shoot them to help keep the theme of the documentary and the aesthetics we wanted. We then planned to interview Erin's sister in a more formal and controlled setting. This also means the interview would be longer and more in depth than vox pops which will allow the documentary more substance and structure past Vox Pops. We then scouted a location to film our diary entry sections of the vlog by looking at a room in the Big Local and we had to decide if it would look good and if the sound would be good and after turning off a fridge and finding a perfect corner with a sofa to film on we chose that location.

week 7

We talked to the costume designer Carole Machin about her role in projects like Moon Knight and Dune and how she got to the position she is in. She told us about how it is inevitable that you will have to do free work experience to get into the industry. You can email a lot of people in media to get work experience and if you don't get a response you can always email again and be tenacious to getting that experience. When on a set have a notepad to write the name and a description of people you're introduced to as it will help you stand out by remembering. Write down anywhere you can stay so you aren't just based in the North East. Always read the call sheet. B roll/supporting footage Can be used to fill in blanks or mistakes or can express certain themes in an interesting way insert shots-show a different angle/shot of a scene FX shots-use of special effects to show something that can't be shown practically establishing shots-sets up character, time or location stock ...
